Leinenkugel's
Leinenkugel's
Leinenkugel's, officially known as the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company, is a regional American brewery located in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. Founded in 1867 by Jacob Leinenkugel and John Miller, it is one of the oldest breweries in the United States. The brewery is known for its wide variety of beers, including its popular Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy.
History
The brewery was established in 1867 by Jacob Leinenkugel, a German immigrant, and John Miller. The location in Chippewa Falls was chosen for its proximity to the Chippewa River, which provided a reliable source of water, and the surrounding forests, which supplied the wood needed for brewing and building.
Jacob Leinenkugel brought with him the brewing traditions of his homeland, and the brewery quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality beers. The original brewery produced a variety of beers, including lagers and ales, which were distributed throughout the region.
In the early 20th century, the brewery expanded its operations and began to distribute its beers more widely. Despite the challenges of Prohibition in the United States, Leinenkugel's survived by producing non-alcoholic beverages and other products.
Products
Leinenkugel's is best known for its Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy, a refreshing blend of beer and lemonade that has become a popular choice during the summer months. The brewery also produces a variety of other beers, including traditional lagers, wheat beers, and seasonal offerings.
Some of the notable products include:
- Leinenkugel's Original - A classic American lager that has been brewed since the brewery's founding.
- Leinenkugel's Honey Weiss - A wheat beer brewed with a touch of honey.
- Leinenkugel's Oktoberfest - A traditional Märzen-style beer brewed for the fall season.
Brewery Tours
The Leinenkugel's brewery in Chippewa Falls offers tours to the public, providing visitors with an opportunity to learn about the brewing process and the history of the company. The tours include a visit to the Leinie Lodge, where guests can sample a variety of Leinenkugel's beers and purchase merchandise.
Ownership
In 1988, the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company was acquired by Miller Brewing Company, which later became part of Molson Coors Beverage Company. Despite the acquisition, Leinenkugel's has maintained its identity and continues to operate as a distinct brand within the larger company.
