Leicester (pronounced /ˈlɛstər/ "Lester") is a city and unitary authority area in the East Midlands of England, and the county town of Leicestershire. The city lies on the River Soar and close to the eastern end of the National Forest.
Etymology
The name "Leicester" is thought to derive from the Celtic tribe Corieltauvi, who were recorded by the Romans as living in the area. The Roman name for the settlement was Ratae Corieltauvorum. Over time, this name was shortened to Leicester.
