Leena Peltonen-Palotie (pronunciation: LEE-nah PEL-toh-nen PAL-oh-tee) was a renowned Finnish geneticist known for her significant contributions to the field of human genetics.

Etymology

The name "Leena" is of Finnish origin and means "light". "Peltonen" is a common Finnish surname, and "Palotie" is derived from the Finnish words "palo" (fire) and "tie" (road).

Career

Leena Peltonen-Palotie was born on June 16, 1952, in Helsinki, Finland. She completed her Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from the University of Helsinki in 1978. Peltonen-Palotie was a pioneer in the field of Human Genetics, particularly in the study of Genetic Diseases. She is best known for her work on the genetics of Rare Diseases, including Familial Hypercholesterolemia, Salla Disease, and Lactose Intolerance.
