Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine
Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) is a medical school in Singapore, established in joint partnership between Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) and Imperial College London. Named after the prominent businessman and philanthropist, Lee Kong Chian, the school was founded with the aim of addressing the medical needs of Singapore by educating a new generation of doctors and healthcare professionals.
History
The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine was officially established in 2010, following an agreement between NTU Singapore and Imperial College London. The collaboration brought together NTU's strengths in engineering and biomedical sciences with Imperial's expertise in medical education and research. The school admitted its inaugural cohort of students in August 2013.
Campus
LKCMedicine operates across two main campuses: the Clinical Sciences Building in Novena, situated close to major healthcare facilities in Singapore, and the Experimental Medicine Building on the NTU main campus. The Novena campus serves as the primary location for clinical learning, while the NTU campus supports pre-clinical education and research activities.
Programmes
The school offers a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme, designed to be completed in five years. The curriculum is modeled on Imperial College London's medical curriculum, integrating medical science with clinical practice from the first year. It emphasizes team-based learning, early clinical exposure, and the use of technology in medicine.
Research
Research at LKCMedicine is focused on areas relevant to Singapore's healthcare needs, including metabolic diseases, infectious diseases, and mental health. The school has established several research centers and institutes to facilitate multidisciplinary research collaborations and innovation in medical technologies.
Admissions
Admission to LKCMedicine is highly competitive, with candidates evaluated based on academic performance, aptitude for medicine, and personal qualities. Applicants must undergo a rigorous selection process, including interviews and a situational judgement test.
Affiliations
LKCMedicine is closely affiliated with major healthcare groups in Singapore, including the National Healthcare Group and Singapore Health Services. These affiliations provide students with extensive clinical training opportunities across a network of hospitals and healthcare facilities.
Notable Achievements
Since its inception, LKCMedicine has made significant contributions to medical education and research in Singapore. Its innovative curriculum and emphasis on technology in medicine have been recognized both locally and internationally.
Future Directions
LKCMedicine continues to evolve, with plans to expand its educational and research programmes. The school aims to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of healthcare in Singapore and beyond, through the development of skilled, compassionate, and innovative medical professionals.
