Lean (Medicine)

Lean (/liːn/), also known as Purple Drank, is a recreational drug, popular in the hip-hop community in the southern United States. Its main ingredient is prescription-strength cough syrup containing codeine and promethazine.

Etymology

The term "Lean" comes from the act of users leaning over due to the drowsiness that the drug induces. The name "Purple Drank" is derived from its typically purple color, which comes from the dyes in the cough syrup.

Usage

Lean is typically consumed in a beverage, which is sipped rather than drunk quickly. This method of consumption allows the user to enjoy the euphoric effects over a longer period of time. The cough syrup is often mixed with soda and sometimes hard candies.

Effects

The codeine in Lean acts as a central nervous system depressant, reducing pain and causing sedation, while the promethazine enhances these effects and also acts as an antihistamine. The combination of these effects can lead to a state of relaxation and euphoria. However, excessive use can lead to serious health problems such as respiratory distress or failure, and even death.
