History

Édouard Manet painted Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe in 1862 and 1863. The painting was rejected by the Salon in 1863, which led Manet to exhibit it at the Salon des Refusés, a venue for works rejected by the Salon.

Description

The painting features a nude woman, a scantily dressed female bather, and two fully dressed men in a rural setting. The nude woman is looking directly at the viewer, a departure from the traditional depiction of nude women in art, who were typically depicted as shy or modest.

Reception and influence

The painting was controversial when it was first exhibited, due to its depiction of a nude woman with fully dressed men. However, it has since been recognized as a pivotal work in the development of modern art. It has influenced many other artists, including Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso.
