LeRoy Carhart was born on September 24, 1941. He is a retired United States Air Force colonel and a physician who specializes in obstetrics and gynecology. Carhart is known for his involvement in two major United States Supreme Court cases, Stenberg v. Carhart and Gonzales v. Carhart, which dealt with the legality of partial-birth abortions.
Stenberg v. Carhart
In Stenberg v. Carhart (2000), the Supreme Court ruled that a Nebraska law banning partial-birth abortions was unconstitutional. The court held that the law was too vague and imposed an undue burden on women seeking abortions.
Gonzales v. Carhart
In Gonzales v. Carhart (2007), the Supreme Court upheld the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003. The court ruled that the act did not impose an undue burden on women seeking abortions.
