Lascaux is a complex of caves located in the southwestern region of France, near the village of Montignac in the department of Dordogne. Discovered in 1940 by four teenagers, the caves are famous for their Paleolithic cave paintings. The walls of the caves are decorated with some of the best-preserved and most spectacular examples of prehistoric art in the world. Due to its exceptional prehistoric artwork, Lascaux has been dubbed the "Sistine Chapel of Prehistory."

Discovery and History

The discovery of Lascaux occurred by chance on September 12, 1940, when Marcel Ravidat, an 18-year-old mechanic, stumbled upon a hidden underground entrance to the cave system. Ravidat, along with three friends, Jacques Marsal, Georges Agnel, and Simon Coencas, explored the caves and were the first humans to lay eyes on the artwork in thousands of years. The caves were opened to the public in 1948 but were closed in 1963 to preserve the art. Since then, the French government has taken steps to protect and conserve the Lascaux caves.

The Paintings

The walls of Lascaux are covered with more than 600 paintings and 1,500 engravings that date back to somewhere between 15,000 and 17,000 years ago. In order to preserve the original caves, several replicas have been created. The most notable of these is Lascaux II, an exact copy of the Great Hall of the Bulls and the Painted Gallery, which opened in 1983. Lascaux II allows visitors to experience the beauty and significance of the cave paintings without endangering the originals.

In 2012, Lascaux III, a traveling exhibition, was launched to bring replicas of the cave paintings to audiences around the world. Lascaux IV, a more comprehensive replica, opened in 2016 and offers a complete digital experience of the caves, including interactive displays and virtual reality.
