La Guardia Committee

The La Guardia Committee (pronounced: la gwaɾˈði.a kəˈmɪti) was the first in-depth study into the effects of marijuana on individuals and society. The committee was named after its chairman, Fiorello H. La Guardia, who was the Mayor of New York City at the time.

Etymology

The term "La Guardia Committee" is derived from the name of its chairman, Fiorello H. La Guardia. The Italian surname "La Guardia" translates to "the guard" in English. The term "committee" originates from the Latin word "committere" which means "to entrust" and refers to a group of people entrusted with a certain task or responsibility.

History

The La Guardia Committee was formed in 1938 in response to public concern about the potential dangers of marijuana use. The committee was tasked with conducting a comprehensive study into the effects of marijuana on the individual and society. The study was conducted over a period of five years and involved extensive research and interviews with marijuana users and experts in the field.

Findings

The findings of the La Guardia Committee contradicted many of the prevailing beliefs about marijuana at the time. The committee found that marijuana did not lead to significant addiction in the medical sense, did not lead to morphine, heroin or cocaine addiction, and did not cause violent, aggressive, anti-social behavior or uncontrolled sexual urges. The committee's report concluded that the societal threat of marijuana was exaggerated.

Impact

The La Guardia Committee's findings had a significant impact on the public perception of marijuana and influenced future drug policy in the United States. Despite the committee's findings, marijuana remained illegal in the United States and many other countries.
