L4 (Vertebra)

L4 (pronounced "el-four") is a term used in medical parlance to refer to the fourth lumbar vertebra, one of the five vertebrae in the lumbar spine that are located in the lower back region.

Etymology

The term "L4" is derived from the Latin word "lumbus" meaning loin, and the number "4" signifies its position as the fourth vertebra in the lumbar region of the spine.

Anatomy

The L4 vertebra is located towards the lower end of the vertebral column. It is larger in size compared to the vertebrae above it, reflecting its role in bearing more body weight. The L4 vertebra, like other lumbar vertebrae, has a large, round vertebral body and a short, thick spinous process. It articulates with the L3 vertebra above and the L5 vertebra below through the intervertebral discs.

Clinical Significance

Conditions affecting the L4 vertebra or the L4 spinal nerve can lead to lower back pain, sciatica, or leg weakness. These conditions include herniated disc, spinal stenosis, and spondylolisthesis.

Related Terms

  • Lumbar spine: The section of the spine located in the lower back, consisting of five lumbar vertebrae (L1 to L5).
  • Intervertebral discs: The fibrocartilaginous cushions serving as the spine's shock-absorbing system, which protect the vertebrae, brain, and other structures.
  • Herniated disc: A condition in which the annulus fibrosus of the intervertebral disc ruptures, allowing the soft, central portion to bulge out.
  • Spinal stenosis: A narrowing of the spinal canal that can cause compression of the spinal cord and nerves.
  • Spondylolisthesis: A condition in which a defect in a vertebra causes it to slip forward onto the vertebra below it.
