Kulpsville, Pennsylvania

Kulpsville is a census-designated place (CDP) located within Towamencin Township, in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2010 census, the population of Kulpsville was 8,194. The community is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area and is served by the North Penn School District.

History

Kulpsville was named after the Kulp family, early settlers of the area. The community grew around the intersection of Sumneytown Pike and Forty Foot Road, two important thoroughfares in the region. The Kulpsville Tavern, a historic building still standing today, was a popular stop for travelers in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Geography

Kulpsville is located at 40°14′29″N 75°20′39″W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.4 square miles, all of it land. The community is primarily residential, with a mix of single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 8,194 people, 3,568 households, and 2,346 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,410.6 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the CDP was 86.4% White, 3.2% African American, 0.1% Native American, 7.8% Asian, 0.9% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.8% of the population.

Education

Kulpsville is served by the North Penn School District. Students in grades K-6 attend General Nash Elementary School, while students in grades 7-9 attend Penndale Middle School, and students in grades 10-12 attend North Penn High School.

Transportation

Kulpsville is served by several major roads, including Interstate 476, which provides access to Philadelphia and other parts of the metropolitan area. The community is also served by the SEPTA Lansdale/Doylestown Line at the nearby Lansdale station.

• James C. Greenwood, former U.S. Representative for Pennsylvania's 8th congressional district, was born in Kulpsville.
