Knight Bachelor

Knight Bachelor is the most basic and oldest rank of a man who has been knighted by the monarch but is not a member of one of the organized orders of chivalry. The term "bachelor" in this context refers to a knight who does not belong to an order or fraternity of knights.
History[edit]
The title of Knight Bachelor dates back to the reign of Henry III in the 13th century. It was originally a title given to a knight who had not yet earned the right to lead other knights into battle. Over time, it evolved into a recognition of service to the crown and the country.
Appointment[edit]
Knights Bachelor are appointed by the monarch of the United Kingdom on the advice of the Prime Minister. The appointment is usually made during the New Year Honours or the Birthday Honours lists. The investiture ceremony is conducted by the monarch or a representative, such as the Prince of Wales.
Insignia[edit]
Unlike members of the orders of chivalry, Knights Bachelor do not have a specific insignia. However, they are entitled to use the title "Sir" before their first name. The wife of a Knight Bachelor is given the courtesy title of "Lady."
Notable Knights Bachelor[edit]
Many prominent figures in various fields have been appointed as Knights Bachelor. These include individuals from the arts, sciences, politics, and business. Some notable examples are:
Modern Role[edit]
