Kids Help Phone (pronounced: kids help fōn) is a Canadian charitable organization that provides online and telephone counselling and volunteer-led, text-based support in English and French to youth across Canada.

Etymology

The term "Kids Help Phone" is a combination of the words "kids", "help", and "phone". "Kids" is a common term for children, "help" refers to the act of assisting or aiding, and "phone" refers to the telecommunication device used to transmit and receive sound.

History

Kids Help Phone was established in 1989 as a toll-free, 24-hour, bilingual and anonymous phone counselling, web counselling and referral service for children and youth in Canada. The decision to create this service came in response to child abuse cases, with the goal of providing a safe avenue for kids to voice their concerns and seek help.

  • Crisis Text Line: Kids Help Phone, in partnership with Crisis Text Line, provides a text-based service where kids and youth can text with a trained, volunteer Crisis Responder for support in any type of crisis.
