Joint terminal attack controller
Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) is a qualified service member who directs the action of combat aircraft engaged in close air support (CAS) and other offensive air operations from a forward position. JTACs are responsible for ensuring that air support is integrated with the ground commander's scheme of maneuver and that the effects of air operations are synchronized with the ground battle.
Roles and Responsibilities
JTACs are trained to provide precise targeting information to aircraft, artillery, and naval gunfire. They are capable of coordinating and controlling airstrikes, artillery, and naval gunfire in support of ground forces. Their primary responsibilities include:
- Communicating with aircraft to provide target information.
- Coordinating with ground forces to ensure the safety and effectiveness of air support.
- Providing real-time feedback to pilots and ground commanders.
- Ensuring compliance with the rules of engagement and minimizing the risk of collateral damage.
Training and Qualification
JTACs undergo rigorous training to qualify for their role. This training includes:
- Basic military training and advanced individual training.
- Specialized JTAC courses that cover topics such as close air support, targeting, and communication.
- Field exercises and simulations to practice coordinating air support in various scenarios.
Equipment
JTACs use a variety of equipment to perform their duties, including:
- Radios and communication devices to maintain contact with aircraft and ground forces.
- Laser designators to mark targets for precision-guided munitions.
- GPS devices for accurate positioning and navigation.
- Night vision goggles and other optical devices for target identification in low-light conditions.
Operational Environment
JTACs operate in a wide range of environments, from urban areas to remote and rugged terrain. They must be adaptable and capable of working under extreme conditions. Their role is critical in modern warfare, where the integration of air and ground operations is essential for mission success.
