John Zerwas

John Zerwas is an American physician and politician who served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 2007 to 2019. He represented the 28th District, which encompasses a portion of Fort Bend County.
Early Life and Education[edit]
John Zerwas was born on March 24, 1955, in Houston, Texas. He attended the University of Houston, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He then went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Baylor College of Medicine.
Medical Career[edit]
Zerwas is a board-certified anesthesiologist. He has held various leadership positions in the medical field, including serving as the president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists. He has also been involved with the Memorial Hermann Health System, where he served as the Chief Medical Officer.
Political Career[edit]
John Zerwas was first elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 2006 and took office in January 2007. During his tenure, he was known for his work on healthcare policy and budget issues. He served on several key committees, including the Appropriations Committee, where he was the chairman of the subcommittee on health and human services.
Legislative Achievements[edit]
Zerwas was instrumental in the passage of several significant pieces of legislation. He played a key role in the expansion of graduate medical education in Texas and worked on measures to address the opioid crisis. He was also involved in efforts to reform the state's Medicaid program and improve access to healthcare services.
Personal Life[edit]
John Zerwas is married and has four children. He resides in Richmond, Texas.
Retirement[edit]
In 2019, Zerwas announced his retirement from the Texas House of Representatives. After leaving office, he continued to be active in the medical community and healthcare policy.
