John Archer (physician)
John Archer (c. 1741 – 1810) was an Irish-born physician who immigrated to the United States, where he practiced medicine and became involved in politics. He is not to be confused with his son, also named John Archer (1777–1830), who was the first African-American to receive a medical degree.
Early life and education[edit]
John Archer was born around 1741 in Ireland. He later immigrated to the United States and settled in Maryland. He pursued his medical education at the College of Philadelphia (now the University of Pennsylvania), where he obtained his medical degree.
Career[edit]
Archer practiced medicine in Harford County, Maryland, where he became a prominent figure in the community. In addition to his medical practice, he was involved in politics, serving as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates and later as a United States Congressman from Maryland.
Personal life[edit]
Archer married Sarah Vaughan, and they had several children, including their son John Archer Jr., who would go on to become the first African-American to receive a medical degree. John Archer Jr. was born in 1777 and pursued his medical education at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, where he graduated in 1804.
Death[edit]
John Archer Sr. died in 1810 in Baltimore, Maryland, leaving behind a legacy in both the fields of medicine and politics.
