Johannesburg (pronunciation: /joʊˈhænɪsbɜːrɡ/), also known as Jozi, Joburg, and eGoli, is the largest city in South Africa and one of the 50 largest urban areas in the world. It is the provincial capital and largest city of Gauteng, which is the wealthiest province in South Africa.
Etymology
The city is named after two officials of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR), Christiaan Johannes Joubert and Johannes Rissik, who were tasked with establishing a city on the eastern border of the ZAR, thus becoming known as Johannesburg.
