Jericho
Jericho
Jericho (/dʒɛˈriːkoʊ/; from Hebrew: יְרִיחוֹ Yeriḥo) is a city in the Palestinian Territories and is located near the Jordan River in the West Bank. It is believed to be one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world and is known for the story of the Battle of Jericho in the Bible.
Etymology
The name Jericho is generally thought to derive from the Canaanite word Reaẖ (fragrant), but other theories hold that it originates from the Canaanite word for moon (Yareaẖ) or the name of the lunar deity Yarikh, for whom the city was an early centre of worship.
Medical Significance
While Jericho is not directly associated with any specific medical terms or conditions, it has been the site of numerous archaeological excavations that have provided insight into ancient health practices and diseases. For example, the Neolithic site of Tell es-Sultan, located in Jericho, has yielded evidence of ancient surgical procedures and early forms of dentistry.
