James Roday Rodriguez (born James David Rodriguez; April 4, 1976) is an American actor, director, and screenwriter. He is best known for his role as Shawn Spencer in the television series Psych, for which he has gained widespread recognition.

Early life[edit]

James Roday Rodriguez was born in San Antonio, Texas, to Jaime "Jim" Rodriguez and Irene Rodriguez. His father is of Mexican descent while his mother is of English, Irish, and Scottish ancestry. He attended Taft High School in San Antonio. After high school, he studied theater at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where he earned a bachelor's degree in fine arts.

Career[edit]

Rodriguez started his acting career in various theatrical productions. In 1999, he made his television debut. His early career included guest appearances on shows like Providence and The Dukes of Hazzard.

In 2006, Rodriguez was cast as the lead role of Shawn Spencer in the USA Network original series Psych. The show was a comedic take on a young crime consultant who tricks the police into believing he has psychic abilities. Psych ran for eight seasons, ending in 2014, and it led to two follow-up movies.

Beyond acting, Rodriguez has also directed several episodes of Psych and other TV shows, including Battle Creek and Rosewood. As a screenwriter, he has written episodes for Psych and the movie Psych: The Movie.

Rodriguez has been open about his Mexican heritage and has changed his professional name to James Roday Rodriguez in 2020 to embrace his Hispanic roots fully.
