The Israel Medical Association (IMA) is the professional organization representing physicians in Israel. The pronunciation of the term is /ɪzˈreɪəl ˈmɛdɪkəl əˌsoʊsiˈeɪʃən/. The etymology of the term is derived from the country name "Israel" and the English words "Medical Association".
History
The Israel Medical Association was established in 1929, prior to the establishment of the State of Israel. It was initially called the Hebrew Medical Association in Eretz Israel. The name was changed to its current form after the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.
Function
The IMA is responsible for safeguarding the quality of medicine in Israel, the rights of its member physicians, and the health of the patients. It also represents the medical profession in Israel on both national and international levels.
