Isoptin (pronounced: eye-SOP-tin), also known as Verapamil (pronounced: vair-uh-PAM-ill), is a medication used to treat high blood pressure, angina, and certain heart rhythm disorders. It belongs to a class of drugs known as calcium channel blockers.

Etymology

The term "Isoptin" is a brand name for the drug Verapamil. The etymology of "Verapamil" is not definitively known, but it is believed to be derived from the Latin "vera", meaning "true", and "pamil", a suffix commonly used in the naming of pharmaceutical drugs.

Usage

Isoptin works by relaxing the muscles of your heart and blood vessels. It is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), angina (chest pain), and certain heart rhythm disorders. It is also used to prevent migraine headaches and to increase exercise capacity in people with angina.
