Isaac Pennington
English politician and Lord Mayor of London
Isaac Pennington (c. 1587 – 17 December 1661) was an influential English politician and a prominent figure during the English Civil War. He served as the Lord Mayor of London and was a staunch supporter of the Parliamentarians.
Early Life
Isaac Pennington was born around 1587, the son of Robert Pennington, a successful merchant. He was educated in London and followed in his father's footsteps, becoming a prosperous merchant himself. His business acumen and connections within the city allowed him to rise quickly in the ranks of London's civic administration.
Political Career
Pennington's political career began in earnest when he was elected as an alderman of the City of London. His influence grew, and he became a member of the Long Parliament in 1640, representing the city. Pennington was a fervent supporter of the Parliamentarian cause against King Charles I.
Lord Mayor of London
In 1642, Pennington was elected as the Lord Mayor of London, a position he held during a critical period of the English Civil War. As Lord Mayor, he played a crucial role in organizing the city's defenses and supporting the Parliamentary army. His leadership was instrumental in securing London's allegiance to the Parliamentarian cause.
Role in the English Civil War
Pennington was a key figure in the Committee of Safety, which was responsible for the defense of London. He was also involved in the Committee of Both Kingdoms, which coordinated military efforts between England and Scotland. His commitment to the Parliamentarian cause was unwavering, and he was known for his radical views.
Imprisonment and Later Life
After the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Pennington was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London. He was later released but was stripped of his wealth and influence. Pennington spent his final years in relative obscurity and died on 17 December 1661.
Legacy
Isaac Pennington's legacy is that of a dedicated public servant and a committed advocate for the Parliamentary cause. His efforts during the English Civil War helped shape the course of English history, and his leadership in London was pivotal during a time of great upheaval.
