Isaac Pennington

Isaac Pennington (c. 1587 – 17 December 1661) was an influential English politician and a prominent figure during the English Civil War. He served as the Lord Mayor of London and was a staunch supporter of the Parliamentarians.

Early Life

Isaac Pennington was born around 1587, the son of Robert Pennington, a successful merchant. He was educated in London and followed in his father's footsteps, becoming a prosperous merchant himself. His business acumen and connections within the city allowed him to rise quickly in the ranks of London's civic administration.

Political Career

Pennington's political career began in earnest when he was elected as an alderman of the City of London. His influence grew, and he became a member of the Long Parliament in 1640, representing the city. Pennington was a fervent supporter of the Parliamentarian cause against King Charles I.

Lord Mayor of London

In 1642, Pennington was elected as the Lord Mayor of London, a position he held during a critical period of the English Civil War. As Lord Mayor, he played a crucial role in organizing the city's defenses and supporting the Parliamentary army.
