Interview

An Interview (pronounced in-ter-vyoo) is a conversation where questions are asked and answers are given. In common parlance, the word "interview" refers to a one-on-one conversation between an interviewer and an interviewee. The interviewer asks questions to which the interviewee responds, usually providing information.

Etymology

The term "interview" comes from Middle French entrevue, a word that translates to "see each other" or "see in turn". It was first used in English in the mid-16th century to mean a meeting face to face. The sense of it being a conversation to get information was first recorded in 1869.

Types of Interviews

There are several types of interviews, including:

  • Job Interview: A job interview is a formal conversation between a job applicant and a representative of an employer which is conducted to assess whether the applicant should be hired.
  • Clinical Interview: A clinical interview is a method used by psychologists and psychiatrists to gather information about a person to aid in diagnosis or treatment.
  • Research Interview: A research interview is one in which the point of the interview itself is to gather information for a research project, such as a thesis, dissertation, published report or any other research project that requires in depth analysis.
