The ISSM was founded in 1978 as the International Society for Impotence Research (ISIR). In 1999, the society was renamed to the International Society for Sexual and Impotence Research (ISSIR) to reflect a broader focus. Finally, in 2004, it adopted its current name, the International Society for Sexual Medicine, to encompass all aspects of sexual health and medicine.
