Intellectual Property Rights (pronunciation: /ɪnˌtɛlɛkʧʊəl ˈprɒpərti raɪts/) are legal rights that provide creators protection for their inventions, literature and artistic works, symbols, names, and images. These rights allow creators to benefit from their own work or investment in a creation.
Etymology
The term "Intellectual Property Rights" originates from the Latin "intellectus" meaning "understanding", and "proprietas" meaning "property". The term was first used in the 19th century, but the concept has roots in the early legal systems of Ancient Greece and Rome.
Types of Intellectual Property Rights
There are several types of Intellectual Property Rights, including:
