Intellect (/ɪnˈtɛlɛkt/) is the faculty of reasoning and understanding objectively, especially with regard to abstract or academic matters. It is often considered synonymous with the mind or the intellect, as opposed to feelings or desires.
Etymology
The term "intellect" is derived from the Latin intellectus, which is the noun form of the verb intelligere, meaning "to understand". The verb intelligere is a compound of inter (between) and legere (to choose, to read), thus implying the ability to discern or choose.
