Integrated Geography

Integrated geography (pronounced in-te-gra-ted geo-gra-phy, from the Greek words "integrated" meaning combined, and "geography" meaning description of the earth) is the branch of geography that seeks to unify the various branches of geography into a cohesive whole.

Integrated geography is concerned with the description, explanation, and prediction of spatial patterns and processes on the Earth's surface. It is distinguished from other branches of geography mainly by its holistic approach to studying the interactions between humans and their environment.

History

The concept of integrated geography has its roots in the 19th century, when geographers began to develop a more holistic approach to their discipline. The term itself, however, did not come into common use until the late 20th century.

Sub-disciplines

Integrated geography can be divided into several sub-disciplines, including:

  • Physical geography: This branch of geography deals with the study of the physical features of the Earth, including its climate, landforms, and ecosystems.
  • Human geography: This branch of geography focuses on the study of people, their communities, cultures, economies, and interactions with the environment.
  • Environmental geography: This branch of geography combines elements of physical and human geography to study the interactions between humans and their environment.

  • Cartography: This is the study and practice of making maps.
  • Geostatistics: This is a branch of statistics focusing on spatial or spatiotemporal datasets.
