Founded in 1930 by Abraham Flexner, along with philanthropists Louis Bamberger and Caroline Bamberger Fuld, the IAS is dedicated to the pursuit of fundamental research and intellectual inquiry. It is one of the world's leading centers for theoretical research and intellectual inquiry.
History[edit]
The IAS was established with the vision of creating a haven for scholars to pursue research without the constraints of teaching responsibilities. Abraham Flexner was instrumental in shaping the institute's mission and philosophy, emphasizing the importance of pure research. The institute officially opened its doors in 1933, and its first faculty included notable scholars such as Albert Einstein, John von Neumann, and Kurt Gödel.
Organization[edit]
The IAS is organized into four main schools:
- School of Historical Studies
- School of Mathematics
- School of Natural Sciences
- School of Social Science
Each school operates independently, fostering an environment where scholars can collaborate across disciplines.

- John von Neumann - Mathematician and polymath.
- Kurt Gödel - Logician and mathematician.
- J. Robert Oppenheimer - Theoretical physicist and scientific director of the Manhattan Project.
Research and Contributions[edit]
The IAS has made significant contributions to various fields of study. In mathematics, it has been a center for research in areas such as number theory, algebraic geometry, and topology. In the natural sciences, the IAS has contributed to advancements in theoretical physics, cosmology, and biology. The School of Historical Studies has been influential in the fields of history, art history, and archaeology.
Campus[edit]
The IAS campus is located on a 600-acre site in Princeton, New Jersey.
