Inclusion conjunctivitis
Inclusion Conjunctivitis
Inclusion conjunctivitis (pronunciation: in-kloo-zhun kon-junk-ti-vi-tis), also known as Chlamydial conjunctivitis or Trachoma, is an infection of the conjunctiva (the membrane that covers the white part of the eye) caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis.
Etymology
The term "inclusion" refers to the presence of the bacteria inside the cells of the conjunctiva, while "conjunctivitis" is derived from Latin, with "conjunctiva" meaning "join together" and "-itis" denoting inflammation.
Symptoms
Symptoms of inclusion conjunctivitis may include redness, irritation, and watering of the eyes. There may also be a sticky or crusty coating on the eyelashes, particularly after sleep.
Causes
Inclusion conjunctivitis is caused by an infection with the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. This bacterium is also responsible for the sexually transmitted infection chlamydia, and the eye infection can be spread through direct contact with the eyes, nose, or throat of an infected person, or through contact with contaminated objects or surfaces.
Treatment
Treatment for inclusion conjunctivitis typically involves antibiotics, such as doxycycline or erythromycin. In severe cases, it may be necessary to use topical antibiotics (applied directly to the eye), or even oral antibiotics.
Prevention
Prevention of inclusion conjunctivitis involves good hygiene practices, such as regular hand washing and avoiding touching the eyes with unwashed hands. It is also important to avoid sharing personal items, such as towels or makeup, that may have come into contact with an infected person's eyes.
