Ina Garten
American chef and television host
Ina Rosenberg Garten (born February 2, 1948) is an American chef, author, and television host. She is best known for her Food Network program Barefoot Contessa and her series of cookbooks.
Early life
Ina Rosenberg was born in Brooklyn, New York City, and raised in Stamford, Connecticut. She showed an early interest in cooking and entertaining, which she later developed into a successful career.
Career
Early career
Before becoming a chef, Garten worked in the White House Office of Management and Budget under Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. She was responsible for writing the nuclear energy budget and policy papers on nuclear energy.
Barefoot Contessa
In 1978, Garten left her government job and purchased a specialty food store in Westhampton Beach, New York, called Barefoot Contessa. The store was a success, and she later moved it to East Hampton.
Cookbooks
Garten has written several bestselling cookbooks, starting with The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook in 1999. Her books focus on simple, elegant recipes that are easy to prepare.
Television
Garten's television show, Barefoot Contessa, premiered on the Food Network in 2002. The show features Garten preparing meals and entertaining guests in her home in East Hampton.
Personal life
Ina Garten has been married to Jeffrey Garten, a Yale School of Management professor and former Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, since 1968. The couple resides in East Hampton, New York.
