Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine (ICOM) is a private, non-profit medical school for osteopathy located in Meridian, Idaho, United States. Established with the aim of addressing the growing need for physicians in the Pacific Northwest and throughout the United States, ICOM holds the distinction of being Idaho's first medical school. The college emphasizes training in osteopathic medicine, a distinct branch of medicine that focuses on the whole person and uses hands-on diagnosis and treatment through a system known as Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT).

History[edit]

The Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine was founded to address the critical shortage of physicians in Idaho and the surrounding regions. Its establishment was driven by the increasing demand for healthcare professionals capable of providing comprehensive healthcare services, especially in rural and underserved areas. The college welcomed its inaugural class in the fall of 2018, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of medical education in Idaho.

Mission[edit]

The mission of ICOM is to educate osteopathic physicians prepared for caring for persons in Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and beyond. The institution is committed to fostering an educational environment that emphasizes primary care, promotes wellness, encourages research, and integrates osteopathic principles and practices into all facets of its training and service.

Academic Programs[edit]

ICOM offers a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree program, designed to be completed in four years. The curriculum is divided into two phases: the first two years focus on basic sciences and preclinical studies, while the last two years are dedicated to clinical rotations in various medical specialties. The college has established affiliations with numerous healthcare facilities across the region to provide students with comprehensive clinical training experiences.

Campus[edit]

The ICOM campus is located in Meridian, Idaho, adjacent to Idaho State University's Meridian campus. It features state-of-the-art facilities, including lecture halls, a simulation center, anatomy labs, and a library. The campus is designed to support a collaborative and interactive learning environment for students and faculty.

Accreditation[edit]

ICOM is accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA), the accrediting agency for the American Osteopathic Association. This accreditation signifies that the college meets or exceeds the standards for osteopathic education and is authorized to confer the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree.

Community Engagement[edit]

A key component of ICOM's mission is to serve the community and improve healthcare delivery in the region. The college actively engages in community service and health education initiatives. Students and faculty participate in health fairs, free clinics, and other outreach programs aimed at promoting health and wellness in underserved areas.

Research[edit]

Research is an integral part of the academic experience at ICOM. The college encourages students and faculty to engage in research activities that contribute to the advancement of medical knowledge and osteopathic medicine. Areas of research interest include primary care, rural health, and osteopathic manipulative medicine.

Conclusion[edit]

The Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine represents a significant advancement in medical education and healthcare in Idaho and the surrounding regions. By focusing on osteopathic medicine and primary care, ICOM aims to produce competent and compassionate physicians who are well-equipped to meet the healthcare needs of today and tomorrow.
