Icarus is a figure from Greek mythology, renowned for his attempt to escape from Crete by means of wings that his father Daedalus constructed from feathers and wax. Icarus' story is often used as a cautionary tale about the dangers of hubris and the limitations of human innovation.

Mythology

According to myth, Icarus and his father, Daedalus, were imprisoned in Crete by King Minos. To escape, Daedalus crafted two sets of wings out of wax and feathers. Before their flight, Daedalus warned Icarus not to fly too close to the sun, as the heat would melt the wax, nor too close to the sea, as the dampness would clog the feathers. Icarus, exhilarated by the thrill of flying, ignored his father's warnings and flew too close to the sun. The wax in his wings melted, and he fell into the sea and drowned. The area where he fell is now called the Icarian Sea, near Icaria, an island southwest of Samos.
