The name IQVIA is a combination of Quintiles and IMS Health, the two companies that merged in 2016 to form IQVIA. Quintiles was a contract research organization, while IMS Health provided information, services, and technology for the healthcare industry.

IQVIA was formed through the merger of Quintiles Transnational and IMS Health in October 2016. The merger was completed in May 2017, creating one of the world's largest contract research organizations. The company's headquarters are located in Durham, North Carolina, and Danbury, Connecticut.
