Hyperphoria
Hyperphoria
Hyperphoria (pronounced: hi-per-for-ee-uh) is a type of vertical heterophoria in which there is a tendency for one eye to deviate upward in relation to the other when the eyes are not engaged in binocular vision. This condition is a subtype of heterophoria, which is a general term for ocular misalignment that is controlled by the binocular fusion mechanism of the brain.
Etymology
The term "hyperphoria" is derived from the Greek words "hyper" meaning "over" or "above", and "phoros" meaning "bearing" or "carrying". Thus, it refers to the condition where one eye 'carries' or 'bears' itself above the other.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
Hyperphoria is often asymptomatic, meaning that it does not typically cause noticeable symptoms. However, in some cases, it can lead to symptoms such as asthenopia (eye strain), diplopia (double vision), or headaches.
Diagnosis of hyperphoria is typically made through a comprehensive eye examination, which may include tests such as the cover test and the Maddox rod test.
Treatment
Treatment for hyperphoria may include vision therapy, the use of prism glasses, or in some cases, strabismus surgery. The goal of treatment is to alleviate symptoms and improve binocular vision.
