Huntington Beach, California (pronunciation: /ˌhʌntɪŋtən ˈbiːtʃ/) is a seaside city in Orange County, in the U.S. state of California. It is named after American businessman Henry E. Huntington. The city is known for its long 9.5-mile (15.3 km) stretch of sandy beach, mild climate, excellent surfing, and beach culture.

Etymology

The city was named after Henry E. Huntington, an American businessman who significantly contributed to the development of Southern California. The word "Huntington" is of English origin, meaning "hunting estate".

Geography

Huntington Beach is located at 33°39′34″N 118°00′01″W. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the west, and has been long known for its long stretch of beautiful beach, its mild climate, and its excellent surfing, earning it the nickname "Surf City".

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 189,992 people residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 77.6% White, 0.8% Black or African American, 0.7% Native American, 11.1% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 5.4% from other races, and 4.2% from two or more races. 17.1% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Economy

The economy of Huntington Beach is primarily based on tourism, with the retail sector playing a large role. The city's top employers include Boeing, Quiksilver, and Hyatt Regency.

Education

Huntington Beach is served by several school districts. Huntington Beach City School District, Ocean View School District, Westminster School District, and Huntington Beach Union High School District are all located within the city.

Transportation

Huntington Beach is accessible via several major highways, including the San Diego Freeway, the San Gabriel River Freeway, and the Garden Grove Freeway. Public transportation is provided by the Orange County Transportation Authority.
