Hugo de Vries (pronounced: Hoo-go de Vrees) was a prominent Dutch botanist and geneticist who is best known for proposing the concept of genes, and for his contributions to the understanding of heredity.
Etymology
The name Hugo is of Germanic origin, meaning "bright in mind and spirit". The surname de Vries is a common Dutch surname, meaning "the Frisian".
Biography
Hugo de Vries was born on February 16, 1848, in Haarlem, Netherlands. He studied botany at the University of Leiden and later became a professor at the University of Amsterdam. His most significant work was on the laws of heredity, where he proposed the concept of genes as the carriers of hereditary traits. This work laid the foundation for the modern field of genetics.
Contributions to Genetics
