History

Howard University was established on March 2, 1867, by the Freedmen's Bureau to provide education for newly emancipated African Americans. The university was named after General Oliver Otis Howard, who was a key figure in its founding and served as its third president.

The university's charter was signed by President Andrew Johnson, and it was initially intended to be a theological seminary for African American clergymen. However, it quickly expanded to include a liberal arts college and a medical school.
