Hospital bed

A hospital bed (/ˈhɒspɪtəl bɛd/; from Old English hospitāle, meaning 'a place of shelter or rest for the sick or infirm' + bedd, meaning 'a piece of furniture for sleep or rest') is a specialized bed that is designed for use by individuals during their stay in a hospital or other medical facility.

Hospital beds are typically adjustable, allowing for the head or feet to be raised or lowered. They may also include features such as side rails, over-bed tables, and electronic buttons for calling a nurse or adjusting the bed's position.

Types of Hospital Beds

There are several types of hospital beds, including:

  • Manual Hospital Bed: These beds are adjusted using hand cranks. They are typically less expensive than other types of hospital beds, but require more physical effort to adjust.
  • Semi-Electric Hospital Bed: These beds have electric controls for raising and lowering the head and foot of the bed, but height adjustments are still made manually.
  • Full-Electric Hospital Bed: These beds are fully electric and can be adjusted using a remote control. They are typically the most expensive type of hospital bed.
  • Bariatric Hospital Bed: These beds are designed to accommodate larger patients. They are typically wider and stronger than standard hospital beds.
  • Low Hospital Bed: These beds are designed to sit lower to the ground, reducing the risk of injury from falls.
