HomoloGene (pronounced: /ˈhɒməloʊˌdʒiːn/) is a system for automated detection of homologs among the annotated genes of several completely sequenced eukaryotic genomes.
Etymology
The term "HomoloGene" is a combination of the words "homologous" and "gene". "Homologous" is derived from the Greek words "homos" meaning same and "logos" meaning relation. It refers to genes in different species that evolved from a common ancestral gene by speciation.
Definition
HomoloGene is a tool developed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) to aid in the identification of Orthologs and paralogs. It uses protein sequence comparison to detect potential homologs in annotated genes from several completely sequenced eukaryotic genomes.
