Holland
Holland
Holland (pronunciation: /ˈhɒlənd/) is a region and former province on the western coast of the Netherlands. The term Holland is also frequently used informally to refer to the whole of the country of the Netherlands. This usage is generally accepted, but some individuals, particularly from the other parts of the Netherlands, may find it undesirable or misleading.
Etymology
The name Holland is derived from the Old Dutch term holtlant (woodland). This spelling variation remained in use until around the 14th century, after which the name stabilized to Holland. The term Holland is also known in reference to the Dutch settlers of New Amsterdam (now New York), who used the term to refer to their native region.
