Highmark (pronounced: /ˈhaɪˌmɑːrk/) is a health insurance company based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. It is one of the largest health insurers in the United States and operates health insurance plans in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and West Virginia.
Etymology
The name "Highmark" is derived from the company's commitment to maintaining high standards, or "high marks," in the provision of health insurance services.
History
Highmark was formed in 1996 by the consolidation of two Pennsylvania health insurance companies, Pennsylvania Blue Shield (based in Camp Hill) and Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania (based in Pittsburgh). In 1998, the company became known as Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Services
Highmark offers a variety of health insurance plans for individuals, families, and businesses. These include Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans, Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans, and Point of Service (POS) plans. The company also offers Medicare and Medicaid services.
