High School

High School (pronunciation: /ˈhaɪ skuːl/) is a term used to describe an educational institution where secondary education is provided. It follows elementary or primary education, and may be followed by higher education such as college or vocational training.

Etymology

The term "High School" originated from Scotland, with the world's oldest being the Royal High School (Edinburgh) in 1505. The term "High" in High School comes from the fact that these schools were originally housed in tall or "high" buildings. Over time, the term has come to represent the level of education provided, which is higher than that of elementary or primary school.
