Het Anker Brewery is a renowned brewery located in Mechelen, Belgium, known for its rich history and contribution to the Belgian beer culture. Established in 1471, Het Anker is one of the oldest breweries in Belgium, with a legacy spanning over five centuries. The brewery is celebrated for producing a wide range of beers, including the famous Gouden Carolus series, which has garnered international acclaim.

History

The origins of Het Anker Brewery trace back to the 15th century, when it was initially a hospital brewery. The name "Het Anker," meaning "The Anchor" in Dutch, was adopted in the early 20th century, symbolizing hope and steadfastness. Over the years, Het Anker has remained a family-owned business, with the Van Breedam family playing a pivotal role in its development and modernization since the 19th century.

Beers

Het Anker Brewery is best known for its Gouden Carolus range, named after the gold coins of Charles V. This series includes several varieties, such as:

  • Gouden Carolus Classic - A rich, dark, and complex beer.
  • Gouden Carolus Tripel - A traditional Belgian Tripel.
  • Gouden Carolus Hopsinjoor - A hoppy beer with a pronounced bitterness.
  • Gouden Carolus Cuvée van de Keizer - A special edition beer, released annually.

In addition to the Gouden Carolus series, Het Anker also produces other notable beers such as Maneblusser, named after the nickname of Mechelen's inhabitants, and the Mechelen's city beer, Boscoli, a fruit beer.

Brewery Tours and Hospitality

Het Anker Brewery offers guided tours, allowing visitors to explore its historic premises and learn about the brewing process. The brewery also features a hotel, Hotel Het Anker, and a brasserie, where guests can enjoy the brewery's beers paired with local cuisine.

Awards and Recognition

Het Anker Brewery has received numerous awards and accolades for its beers, both nationally and internationally. The Gouden Carolus range, in particular, has been a consistent winner at beer competitions, highlighting the brewery's commitment to quality and excellence.

Sustainability

Committed to sustainability, Het Anker has implemented various eco-friendly practices, including the use of solar panels and the recycling of heat generated during the brewing process. These efforts underscore the brewery's dedication to environmental stewardship.
