Hemopexin (pronounced: he-mo-PEX-in) is a plasma protein that binds heme with the highest affinity of any known protein.

Etymology

The term "Hemopexin" is derived from the Greek words "haima" meaning "blood" and "pexis" meaning "fixation".

Function

Hemopexin plays a crucial role in heme metabolism by binding free heme released during the breakdown of hemoglobin. This binding prevents oxidative damage and kidney injury. Hemopexin transports heme to the liver, where it is metabolized and excreted.

Clinical Significance

Hemopexin levels can be used as a diagnostic marker in various diseases. Low levels of hemopexin can indicate hemolytic anemia, while high levels can suggest inflammation or tissue damage. Hemopexin is also being studied for its potential role in neuroprotection and as a therapeutic target in diseases such as sickle cell disease and malaria.
