Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (pronunciation: /ˈhɛlɪˌkɒptər ɪˈmɝːdʒənsi ˈmɛdɪkəl ˈsɝːvɪs/), often abbreviated as HEMS, is a comprehensive system that utilizes helicopters to provide emergency medical assistance in situations where traditional ambulances are not able to reach quickly or are not available.

Etymology

The term "Helicopter Emergency Medical Service" is derived from the words "helicopter", a type of aircraft that can hover, take off, and land vertically; "emergency", a serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation requiring immediate action; and "medical service", referring to the provision of medical care.

Overview

HEMS is a critical component of the emergency medical services system. It is designed to provide rapid, emergency medical care to individuals in remote or inaccessible areas, or in situations where time and specialized care are of the essence.
