The Health Service Executive (HSE) is the body responsible for delivering public health and social care services in Ireland. Established in 2005, the HSE operates under the jurisdiction of the Department of Health and is tasked with providing health and social services to the population of Ireland.
History
The HSE was established on January 1, 2005, as part of a major reform of the Irish health system. It replaced the former Health Boards and other agencies that previously managed health services in Ireland. The creation of the HSE aimed to streamline and improve the efficiency of health service delivery across the country.
Structure
The HSE is organized into several divisions, each responsible for different aspects of health and social care services. These include:
- Acute Hospitals Division
- Primary Care Division
- Mental Health Division
- Social Care Division
- Health and Wellbeing Division
The HSE is overseen by a Director General, who is appointed by the Minister for Health. The Director General is supported by a management team and various regional and local health offices.
