History[edit]
The construction of Truman Veterans' Hospital took place from 1966 to 1972 at a cost of $15 million. In 1975, it was officially named the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital by an act of Congress.
Truman VA is the only hospital in the Heartland Network that has a referral center for open heart surgery, serving Missouri, Kansas, and parts of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Arkansas. The hospital performs at least 250 heart surgeries per year.
In 1995, a new ambulatory care building was added to the hospital, increasing its size by 106,000 square feet. The ambulatory care center was dedicated on March 20, 1998, and cost $15.1 million.
In August 2009, a $25 million expansion project began, adding a suite of operating rooms and renovating the hospital. The expansion added 27,000 square feet to the hospital's facilities.
The Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital has consistently achieved high scores in JCAHO Quality Reporting, making it one of the top hospitals in the state of Missouri.
