Harrow School
Harrow School is an independent boarding school for boys in Harrow, London, England. The School is one of the original nine public schools that were regulated by the Public Schools Act 1868. Harrow's rich history, traditions, and notable alumni have made it one of the most prestigious schools in the world.
History[edit]
Harrow School was founded in 1572 under a Royal Charter granted by Queen Elizabeth I. It was intended to provide free education to the children of the parish of Harrow. Over the centuries, the school expanded and began to charge fees. The school's historic buildings, including the Fourth Form Room and the Old Speech Room, are now listed buildings.
Education[edit]
Harrow provides an all-round education, with a strong emphasis on academic achievement. The school follows the National Curriculum, but with additional subjects and a wider range of options. The school's academic year is divided into three terms: Michaelmas, Lent, and Summer.
Houses[edit]
There are 12 boarding houses at Harrow, each with its own House Master. The houses compete in various inter-house competitions throughout the year, including the Harrow Football competition and the Cricket competition.
Notable Alumni[edit]
Harrow has produced many notable alumni, known as Old Harrovians. These include seven British Prime Ministers, including Winston Churchill, numerous foreign monarchs, and several recipients of the Victoria Cross.
Traditions[edit]
Harrow has many unique traditions, such as the wearing of straw hats, known as Harrow Hats, and the annual Speech Day, where prizes are awarded and speeches are made by the Head Master and a guest speaker.
