Hare Krishna Konar

Hare Krishna Konar (August 5, 1915 – July 23, 1974) was a prominent Indian politician and a key figure in the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)). He is best known for his role in implementing land reforms in West Bengal, which significantly altered the agrarian landscape of the state.

Early Life and Education

Hare Krishna Konar was born in the village of Kamargoria in the Burdwan district of Bengal Presidency, then part of British India. Political Career

As the Minister of Land and Land Revenue in the first United Front (West Bengal) government in 1967, he initiated significant changes in land ownership patterns. His efforts were aimed at redistributing land to the landless and marginal farmers, thereby reducing the power of large landowners and addressing rural poverty.

Konar's land reform policies included the implementation of the Operation Barga program, which provided legal rights to sharecroppers.
