Hampshire College is a private liberal arts college in Amherst, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1965 as an experiment in alternative education, emphasizing student-directed learning and interdisciplinary study. The college is a member of the Five College Consortium, which includes Amherst College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

History

Hampshire College was conceived in the 1950s by the presidents of the four colleges in the Five College Consortium. The college officially opened its doors to students in 1970. The founding documents, known as "The New College Plan," outlined a vision for a new kind of liberal arts education that would be more flexible and student-centered.

Academics

Hampshire College does not have traditional majors. Instead, students design their own programs of study, called "concentrations," which are often interdisciplinary. The academic program is divided into three "divisions":

  • Division I: Foundational studies
  • Division II: Concentration
  • Division III: Advanced project

Students are evaluated through narrative evaluations rather than traditional grades. This approach encourages deep learning and intellectual risk-taking.
